Nominations are now open for up to six members on the New Zealand Mining Board of Examiners due to five members’ terms expiring in November and one resignation.

WorkSafe is seeking people with extractives industry knowledge, experience and leadership in one or more of: operations, health and safety inspections, education and industry training. 

The Board was established under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and its functions are:

  • to advise WorkSafe on competency requirements for mine workers
  • to examine applicants, or have applicants examined, for certificates of competence
  • to issue, renew, cancel, and suspend certificates of competence
  • any other function relating to training and competency requirements for participants in the extractive industry conferred on the Board by regulations under this Act.

Appointments are for up to three years. There are usually six meetings a year in Wellington. The daily fee for a member is $350, with up to half a day’s preparation for each meeting. Members may also be called upon to participate in various working groups or sub-committees.

How to apply

Existing Board members who wish to serve another term and new applicants should supply contact details for two referees and include completed fit and proper person (if required) and declaration of interest forms. A current Ministry of Justice New Zealand criminal record is required as part of the ‘fit and proper person’ check and can take a number of weeks. (This form does not need to be provided if an applicant has completed it for a certificate of competence application.)

Applications must include a covering letter outlining skills, qualifications, relevant experience and availability, curriculum vitae and required documentation. Your letter must also address how you meet the following criteria that applicants will be assessed against:

  • Extensive and current experience, in extractives, preferably in more than one sector/work area e.g. education, operations, health & safety.
  • Understanding of and experience in governance and decision-making and sound judgement.
  • Knowledge of, experience in and commitment to lifting health and safety standards, including learning and development requirements.
  • Able to bring a broad and strategic perspective.
  • Brings broad networks that can be consulted with.
