Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) notified WorkSafe Energy Safety about the fire believed to have been caused by electric scooter batteries placed on charge in a garage. However, it was not certain if the cause of the fire was due to the electric scooter batteries or remote controlled toys that were also being charged in the garage.
The fire was reported to WorkSafe Energy Safety approximately a month after the fire occurred, and as a consequence limited information was available including certainty around the type of equipment involved. The make/model of the scooter was unidentified, as was the type of battery and charger involved (the occupant was unable to provide further information to FENZ).
It is most likely that an electrical malfunction occurred that caused the fire. Due to the limited information available following the delay in notifying Worksafe of the accident, Energy Safety could not warrant a further investigation to determine the detailed cause of this fire.
